Tackle Your Home Improvement Projects This Summer

With the school year winding down and summer just around the corner, people are beginning to think about their unfinished Home Improvement projects, or are getting ready to start new ones. Life’s unexpected twists and turns may have set us back, but we are all eager to get back on course with our home improvement goals for the year and summer break is a great time to do it.

When considering a remodel or improvement, we often find ourselves hesitating to start, or re-start because there are so many unknowns. It’s overwhelming to think of the disruption to our lives as well as the who, what, where, when and how that is needed to achieve the goal.

Here are questions you might ask yourself to gain some clarity and focus.

    • What do we want to do exactly, and why?
    • Will this project improve our personal enjoyment AND add to the value of our home?
    • What are our priorities, what comes first, next and last?
    • How can we be the most efficient and effective with our time, energy and budget?
    • Do we need help?
    • Who do we ask for help?
    • How do we determine cost?
    • Can we afford it?
    • How will we pay for it?
    • Do we have a deadline?
    • Can it be completed by our deadline?
    • Can or should we wait until next year?
    • Can or should we re-locate while the work is being done?

A brief call with a design professional can provide the knowledge you need to find clarity on these questions. The answer to a question like, “Should we wait until next year?” may be answered in an instant and will relieve some pressure and stress.

For example, say you would like a new kitchen before Labor Day and it’s already July. The answer to your question could be: “YES, it can be done if you choose only option A,” or “NO, let’s wait until the fall because we prefer to have the choice of B, C or D.”

The answers to these questions will be unique to each situation. Details like budget, availability and access to a project could turn a “NO” into “YES” and vice versa. If you happen to have the budget available and your home will be unoccupied during the summer, options B, C or D may now be more feasible. The bottom line is, the earlier you start the conversation and begin planning, the greater the options.
